Largest Power Plants in America

The United States operates thousands of power plants, but the largest facilities — nuclear stations, major hydroelectric dams, and sprawling gas-fired complexes — account for a disproportionate share of the nation's electricity. The table below ranks the top 50 plants by nameplate capacity in megawatts (MW).

Nameplate capacity measures the maximum output a plant can produce under ideal conditions. A 3,000 MW nuclear plant running at 90% capacity factor generates far more electricity annually than a 3,000 MW solar farm at 25%. Click any plant name for full generation, emissions, and generator-level detail.
